"USA" --- Florida #1
.
As a kid I always dreamed of going to the United States of America. By the time I turned 15 I knew that one day I would go and visit that place even if that would mean that I had to work hard for it and make a lot of sacrifices. I think I was 16 and a half are so when my Grandmother asked me what I could use for my 17 birthday. I couldn't think of something right away so I said I would tell her as soon as I knew something. Weeks pass by and I still had no clue what I could ask her so I decided to just ask for some money and than I could see what I was gonna do with it. That year my dad asked me if I would come along with him to Spain cause my mom was afraid of flying (that would change) and he didn't want to go by car. Of course I wanted to go! I got the brochures for Spain and started picking out the hotels, etc... At one of the last pages was a picture of Mickey Mouse which led to a promotion for Florida. This included one week in Miami Beach and one week in Orlando the city where this BIG Mouse lives! I told my dad that I wanted to go there but he said it is too expensive cause he was going to pay for everything and I was still skating which also was expensive. So, no Florida! The day before he went to the travel agent I said now look dad... one person going to Florida is exactly as expensive as two persons going to Spain! I told him, if I ask my Grandmother if she would pay that for my 17th birthday than we can go cause for you it stays exactly the same price! He thought I was joking but I wasn't! In fact I picked up the phone right away even before he could tell my mom what my plans were. I told my Grandmother that I knew this great gift for my 17th birthday! Much to my surprise she said yes and so I went to the USA for the first time ever in June 1982. I only had to make one other sacrifice... Normally I was going to see Diana Ross perform here in Brussels but my dad said that I couldn't have it all! I had to choose between two weeks Florida or two hours Diana Ross in concert! I choose Florida saying that Diana Ross will be back one day... and she did come back!
